What the drive belt actually does

A single rubber belt, usually under $20 worth of material, is one of the most common reasons a Metro Detroit kitchen loses its hood mid-service. We know this because it is the call we take most often.

The drive belt in a commercial kitchen exhaust fan transfers power from the motor to the fan wheel. That rotation is what pulls heat, smoke, grease-laden vapor, and cooking odors out of your kitchen and off your roof. If the belt slips, the fan wheel spins slower than the motor is asking it to, and your exhaust volume drops before anything looks visibly wrong.

Belts are consumable by design. They stretch, glaze, crack, and lose tension as they age, and grease buildup on the fan wheel throws the assembly out of balance and wears the belt faster. The failure is gradual, then sudden.

The failure signs most operators miss

Long before a belt snaps, it tells you it is going. In the field we look for a squeal or chirp at fan startup that fades once the wheel is up to speed; black rubber dust on the fan housing, curb, or roof surface, which means the belt is shedding; visible glazing or cracking in the belt’s V-groove; excess deflection when the belt is pressed at the midpoint of its span; a motor amp draw reading below nameplate full-load amps, which indicates the wheel is not carrying its designed load; and smoke lingering under the hood, warm dining room air, or odors drifting toward the front of house. That last one is usually what the customer notices first, and by then the belt has been failing for weeks.

Why we replace belts every 6 months instead of running them to 9

The belt itself is an easy fix. The cost is everything attached to it. After-hours rooftop labor on a weekend is priced accordingly.
