reasons a Metro Detroit kitchen loses its hood mid-service. In the field we look for a squeal or chirp at fan startup that fades once the wheel is up to speed; black rubber dust on the fan housing, curb, or roof surface, which means the belt is shedding; visible glazing or cracking in the belt&#8217;s V-groove; excess deflection when the belt is pressed at the midpoint of its span; a motor amp draw reading below nameplate full-load amps, which indicates the wheel is not carrying its designed load; and smoke lingering under the hood, warm dining room air, or odors drifting toward the front of house.
